The Bay of Naples is a holidaymaker’s dream. Along and above its delightful coastline, welcoming villages and resorts look out over the clear, blue waters of the Mediterranean.
Sorrento’s wonderful cliff-top setting, stylish Corso Italia, maze of alleyways, and lively Piazza Tasso, make it the perfect Italian seaside resort. Spend your evenings relaxing in one of the many cafes and bars, and watch the locals enjoying a gentle passeggiata after the heat of the day.
The village of Sant Agata del Due Golfi boasts stunning views across both the Bay of Salerno and the Bay of Naples, and offers visitors a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Six miles from Sorrento, it’s a calmer, cooler alternative to the lively energy of the larger resort.

Today’s optional excursion takes in two of Italy’s most important historical locations. Monte Cassino has been the site of one of Christendom’s most important monasteries for nearly 1500 years. Almost destroyed during one of the last great battles of the Second World War, it was faithfully rebuilt and stands, today, as a working monastery and monument to the 4000-plus soldiers who lost their lives there. By contrast, the 18th-century Royal Palace at Caserta is a vast building, built in the sumptuous style of Versailles, overlooking a great square and some of Europe’s most splendid gardens.
With its immense cliffs and dizzy bridges spanning deep gorges, the Amalfi Drive is among Europe’s most scenic coast roads. Experience the unforgettable view above Positano’s colourful Moorish-style houses, and visit beautiful Amalfi and Ravello, with its alleys, stairways and roofed passages clinging to the mountainside, on this optional excursion.
On today’s optional excursion we cross to Capri, the magical ‘Isle of Dreams’. Enjoy the spectacular views from Villa San Michele in Anacapri, take a chair-lift to the summit of Solare (payable locally) and visit the island’s main town to shop – or more likely window-shop – at the host of exclusive designer stores.
Another day at leisure to relax in the hotel or explore the surrounding area.
Today’s highlight is an optional visit to Mount Vesuvius, climbing the road to a height of 1000 metres. Perhaps take a guide (payable locally) and climb a further 500 metres or so to the volcano’s rim. Afterwards, take in the haunting ruins of Roman Pompeii, miraculously ‘preserved’ by the volcano’s eruption in AD79. Having been forgotten for hundreds of years, the city was rediscovered in the 18th Century. Since then, excavations have gradually revealed its magnificent villas, temples and frescoed houses.
