After your arrival, you’ll have time to freshen up at your hotel before joining your Tour Manager on a guided tour of Delhi’s fascinating Old City. Discover the historic Red Fort and Jama Masjid Mosque, and enjoy a rickshaw ride through the bustle of Chandni Chowk. Later, see the India Gate war memorial and the vast boulevard of the Rajpath as you turn your attention to New Delhi.
After breakfast, we’ll travel to Agra. Your time here will begin with an afternoon visit to Agra Fort, the monumental citadel of Mughal emperors, including Shah Jahan, builder of the nearby Taj Mahal. Tour the walled city and enjoy the grandeur of its palaces and courtyards, before enjoying a sunset visit to the Taj later this afternoon. The sight of the glowing sun sinking over the monument to undying love is spectacular – an unforgettable highlight of the tour.
After breakfast, we’ll journey to Jaipur, stopping en route at the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri. The former capital of the Mughal Empire, this vast palace complex remains almost perfectly preserved 400 years after its construction.
This morning you’ll visit Amber, the ancient capital of the Rajput Empire, its magnificent palaces and temples dominated by Amber Fort. Climb up to the mighty fortress to take in the stupendous views from the battlements. This afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Jaipur and discover the City Palace, the astronomical observatory and the stunning screened balconies of the Palace of the Winds. Dinner tonight is taken with a local family in Jaipur.
Today we head to the Rajasthani city of Patan, above which towers Patan Mahal, a restored palace that is now a beautiful heritage hotel reached only by camel cart. Enjoy an afternoon walking tour of Patan, and an evening of music and dancing before dinner.
Today we’ll return to Delhi and take a short flight to the 3000-year-old city of Varanasi. This evening, witness the Ganga Aarti, a Hindu ritual of fire and prayers held, each evening, on the vast stone steps of the Dashashwamedh ghat on the banks of the Ganges.
Take to the river as the sun rises, this morning, and watch the crowds of pilgrims at prayer on the ghats. Later, we’ll head out of the city to Sarnath and the deer park in which the Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment. Visit the fascinating archaeological museum, home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka – the symbol of modern India.
Today begins with a flight to Mumbai. Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel and, after an opportunity to take lunch (payable locally), enjoy a ferry ride to Elephanta Island to explore its vast Hindu cave temple. Returning to the city, you’ll have some free time to discover sweeping Marine Drive and the Gateway to India triumphal arch.
This morning, you’ll have the chance to see the city’s dabbawalas in action – collecting and delivering the homemade lunches of over 160,000 workers each day. Spend the afternoon discovering the Prince of Wales Museum’s astonishing collection of Western Indian artefacts, then soak up the atmosphere of famous Juhu Beach during the evening.
After a Farewell Dinner we’ll return to the airport and say farewell as you check in for your overnight flight home.
Arrive back in the UK this morning at the end of a wonderful holiday.
